About Sarah Bellenger
Sarah Bellenger, a 20-year Army Nurse and CRNA turned health tech founder, leads Manage You—a powerful digital wallet and team collaboration platform that streamlines credentialing for clinicians and healthcare enterprises, transforming compliance from a burden into a strategic advantage. OR... I didn't know how brief. But I thought they both would help summarize the nursing part. Sarah Bellenger, MBA, MSN, CRNA, LTC(R), combines more than two decades of clinical and leadership experience with entrepreneurial vision. After earning her BSN from Marquette University (1999) and completing nurse‑anesthesia training at Northeastern University (2011), she built a distinguished career in military and civilian settings, including deployments, White House service, and leadership roles in perioperative care. As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and clinical leader, she has overseen operations, quality, and team development. In parallel, Sarah founded Manage You, a health‑tech venture offering credentialing and professional documentation management for clinicians. Her app was honored with a NETTY Award for “Best Diligent Solution” in 2024. Her military background (20 years’ service, retired in 2019) has informed her leadership style and emphasis on systems, efficiency, and mentorship. Sarah now bridges clinical excellence with digital innovation, positioning herself as a leader at the intersection of nursing, operational management, and health tech.

I took that belief, built a new way forward, and stepped into alignment. I was always meant to be an Empowered Wellness Coach, right here, with all of you. Pouring from a full cup into co-created spaces that truly want you to be well. Rooted in the power of choice, clarity, and the connection to yourself.

Podcast Title: Leading Through the Chaos in Business
Episode: Surviving and Thriving in Economic Downturns, Market Shifts, and Turnover
Host: Tina Baxter
Powered by: The Nurse Shark Academy
Welcome back to The Nurse Shark Academy Show Podcast — the place where nurses learn how to build, grow, and lead thriving businesses without losing heart or purpose along the way.
Today’s topic is one that every entrepreneur — especially nurse entrepreneurs — will face at some point: leading through chaos.
Whether it’s an economic downturn, a rapidly changing marketplace, or frustrating employee turnover, chaos can make even the most passionate nurse-business owner wonder, “What did I get myself into?”
But here’s the thing: chaos isn’t the enemy. Chaos is the classroom. It’s where your leadership is tested, refined, and ultimately proven.
So in the next few minutes, we’re going to unpack how to lead with clarity and calm when everything around you feels uncertain.
Let’s start by naming what chaos looks like in a business.
For some of you, it’s the economy tightening — clients spending less, contracts getting delayed, or reimbursement rates dropping.
For others, it’s the marketplace shifting — new technologies, regulations, or competitors that seem to change the rules overnight.
And then there’s employee turnover — that revolving door that can drain your time, money, and morale.
Here’s a mindset shift: chaos doesn’t mean failure. Chaos means movement. It means the world around you is changing — and your job as a leader isn’t to resist change but to navigate it.
Think of it like this: when you’re in a code blue, the room is chaotic. Alarms are sounding, people are shouting, and everything happens fast. But a good nurse doesn’t panic. She focuses, prioritizes, and leads.
Business leadership in chaotic times works the same way. Your calm becomes everyone else’s anchor.
Let’s talk about money, the part that makes most business owners squirm.
Economic downturns happen. Markets dip. Clients pull back. But the businesses that survive — and even grow — are the ones that stay strategic instead of scared.
Here are a few practical things you can do:
Know your numbers.
Look at your expenses, revenue streams, and margins. Cut what doesn’t serve your mission, but don’t just slash blindly. Protect what generates value — your people, your marketing, your client relationships.
Diversify your income.
If you’re a nurse consultant, add an online course. If you own a clinic, offer telehealth or group programs. Multiple revenue streams mean multiple safety nets.
Build cash reserves.
Aim for at least 3–6 months of operating expenses saved. It’s not glamorous, but it’s freedom. When everyone else is panicking, you’ll have options.
Focus on relationships, not just transactions.
When budgets tighten, people choose to work with those they trust. Keep communicating. Send the newsletter. Make the call. Show up.
Economic storms pass — but your reputation for stability and integrity will outlast any downturn.
Now, let’s talk about change. The healthcare industry changes faster than an IV pump beeping at 3 a.m.
AI tools, policy updates, new competitors, shifting patient needs — it’s a whirlwind. But here’s the secret: leaders who adapt don’t just survive, they set the pace.
Three keys to staying ahead:
First — Stay curious.
The most dangerous phrase in business is, “That’s how we’ve always done it.”
Ask, “What’s next?” not “What now?”
Attend conferences, join online groups, and never stop learning.
Second — Innovate small.
Innovation doesn’t mean blowing up your business model. It can be as simple as improving client onboarding, using automation, or adding a subscription service. Small, smart changes compound fast.
Third — Communicate change clearly.
Your team and your clients want to trust you know where the ship is headed. When you pivot, explain why you’re doing it and how it benefits them. Transparency turns anxiety into alignment.
When you lead with clarity, chaos becomes opportunity.
Let’s face it — people don’t just leave jobs; they leave environments.
In nursing, we know burnout all too well. In business, it’s the same principle. If your employees are leaving faster than you can onboard them, something in the culture needs healing.
Here’s where to start:
- Listen more than you lecture. Hold regular check-ins — not just about performance, but about wellbeing. Ask, “How are you doing?” and mean it.
- Recognize contributions. People want to feel seen. A handwritten note, a public thank-you, or flexible scheduling can go further than a bonus.
- Create growth paths. Even small businesses can offer mentorship or training. Give people a reason to envision a future with you.
- Hire slowly, fire kindly. It’s better to leave a role unfilled than to fill it with the wrong energy.
A stable team is the backbone of sustainable growth. But stability doesn’t happen by accident — it’s built through empathy and intentional leadership.
Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating an environment where people can thrive — even when the world outside feels unpredictable.
As nurse leaders, we’ve been trained for high-stakes, high-stress environments. We’ve triaged chaos before — and we can do it again in business.
When everything feels uncertain, focus on what you can control: your mindset, your strategy, and your integrity.
If this conversation resonated with you — if you’re ready to strengthen your leadership, grow your business, and stop feeling like you’re surviving chaos instead of leading through it — I want to personally invite you to join The Nurse Shark Academy.

Welcome to The Nurse Shark Academy with a special Leadership Lessons episode, where we talk about leadership, advocacy, and the future of nursing. I’m your host Tina Baxter, and today, we’re diving into a hot topic — one that every nurse using social media should think about: responsible activism and influencing online.
We’re living in a digital age where nurses have massive influence. We can use our voices to challenge policies, share frontline truths, and educate the public. But — as we’ve seen — some posts can backfire in ways that threaten jobs, licenses, and reputations.
So in this episode, we’ll explore:
- Real examples of nurses who went viral — and sometimes paid the price,
- What to know about your employer’s social media policy,
- Legal pitfalls that can catch you off guard,
- And five practical tips to advocate effectively — without courting backlash.
My mission is for you to own your seat at the table of nurse entrepreneurship, gaining confidence, skills, and freedom to live your life on your own terms. You will dream big and expand your consciousness as an entrepreneur.
Nurses are the most trusted professionals in the world — and for good reason. We see the system up close: the barriers to care, the health inequities, the burnout. It’s natural that we want to speak out.
Social media has given us a megaphone. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X allow nurses to amplify their voices beyond the hospital walls.
Some nurse advocates are doing this beautifully. Take Nurse Keith Carlson, host of The Nurse Keith Show. Nurse Keith is a holistic career coach for nurses, professional podcaster, published author, award-winning blogger, inspiring keynote speaker, and successful nurse entrepreneur. http://nursekeith.com/
Tacarra Durrett, also know as APRN beauty on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. She uses her online platform to discuss nursing issues in the news with her Nurses in the News segment. https://linktr.ee/aprnbeauty?utm_source=linktree_profile_share<sid=d4ec9af0-09ea-4622-926d-d90699f2aa47
That’s responsible activism — contemporary, professional, and rooted in advocating for the nursing profession. There are numerous empowered and impactful nurses out there promoting our profession. I count myself lucky to have this platform and be counted as one of the voices among the many.
But for every success story, there’s a cautionary tale — where good intentions collided with privacy laws, employer policies, or the court of public opinion.
Let’s talk about some real-world examples that made headlines.
Story #1 — The Livestream Gone Wrong
A nurse named Yazz Scott livestreamed herself passing meds during her nursing home shift. She thought it would be educational — showing “what nurses really do.” But the livestream sparked outrage for potential HIPAA violations and unsafe practices. https://nurse.org/news/nurse-yazz-scott-tiktok-livestream/
Story #2 — The Influencer Under Fire
Chris Hernandez, an ER nurse and influencer, was placed on leave after posting a video containing antisemitic remarks while wearing scrubs. His employer stated the content “did not align with our organization’s values.” https://nypost.com/2024/05/18/us-news/nyc-nurse-on-leave-after-saying-jews-should-shut-the-f-k-up-in-video/
Story #3 — The Sutter Health Incident
At Sutter Health, staff were caught on camera joking around bodily fluids in a clinic. The video went viral, prompting an investigation and suspensions. https://www.wptv.com/us-news/medical-staff-fired-after-making-tiktok-video-with-apparent-bodily-fluids-from-patients
Story #4 — The Conspiracy Theorist Nurse
Kate Shemirani, a UK nurse, was struck off the register after spreading anti-vaccine misinformation during the pandemic. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c77dmp3jjepo
Each of these examples shows how fast things can spiral — and how professional reputation extends into the digital world.
5 Tips for Smart, Safe Advocacy
Know your employer’s and board’s policies.
Separate professional and personal identities.
Focus on issues, not incidents.
Stay factual and respectful.
Think before you post — pause, reflect, and review.
If Backlash Happens
Pause before responding.
Clarify, don’t escalate.
Seek guidance.
Document everything.
Learn and share — mistakes can be powerful lessons.
Social media is a powerful advocacy tool — but also a risky one. Before posting, take a breath, remember your duty, and lead responsibly.
If this episode helped you, share it with a colleague or nursing student. I’m Tina Baxter, and this has been The Nurse Shark Academy Show. Leadership Conversation Show Notes
About The Nurse Shark Academy
Welcome to the Leadership Conversations segment of The Nurse Shark Academy Show, available to our patron members and members of The Nurse Shark Academy.
My mission is for you to own your seat at the table of nurse entrepreneurship, gaining confidence, skills, and freedom to live your life on your own terms. You will dream big and expand your consciousness as an entrepreneur.
This episode we dive into “From Team Player to Team Leader: Building & Managing Small Teams”. I’m Tina Baxter, nurse entrepreneur, business mentor, and founder of The Nurse Shark Academy. Today’s episode is a game-changer for any nurse stepping into leadership as a business owner.
If you’ve ever gone from working alongside a team to leading one—especially your own team—you know it’s a whole different world. As nurses, we’re natural collaborators. But when you’re the CEO, the visionary, the one everyone’s looking for direction—it’s not just about pitching in. It’s about leading with clarity, consistency, and confidence.Let’s talk about how to lead your first team—whether it's one virtual assistant or five contractors—with ease and intention.
One of the biggest challenges nurse entrepreneurs faces? Letting go.We’re used to doing it all ourselves—and doing it well. But in business, trying to do everything leads to burnouts and bottlenecks. Here’s a quick mindset shift:Delegation is not abandonment. It’s empowerment.Micromanagement, on the other hand, happens when you delegate without trust. It’s a lose-lose situation. Your team feels stifled, and you stay stuck in the weeds. The goal? Delegate with clear expectations and strong communication. Then let your team shine.
If you’re building or leading a small team, I want you to remember The 3 C’s:1. Clarity – Define roles, expectations, and outcomes clearly. Use job descriptions, SOPs, and checklists.2. Communication – Weekly check-ins, clear feedback, and open-door policy—even if it’s virtual. Slack, Voxer, email—pick your method, but be consistent.3. Culture – What values drive your business? Compassion, timeliness, excellence? Share them and live them. Culture starts with you.Great teams don’t happen by accident; they’re built intentionally by leaders like you.
🎯 Your action steps this week:Choose one task that’s draining your energy and create a 3-step SOP (standard operating procedure) to delegate it. You don’t need to hire a full-time employee to get help—start small and start smart. And if you’re serious about becoming a confident, powerful nurse leader in business, then I invite you to join us inside The Nurse Shark Academy. We give you the tools, mentorship, and community you need to grow a sustainable, profitable nurse-led business—without burnout or overwhelm.Visit www.thenursesharkacademy.biz and apply today. Welcome our guests today, Carolyn Pritchard, co-founder of Bridge Medical Communications in Toronto, Canada. Today’s episode, “How one nurse’s adventurous spirit lead her to empower others.”
I interview nurses who are business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders. I want to hear inspiring stories from the nurse next door who is making a difference in the entrepreneurial and business space. My mission is for you to own your seat at the table of nurse entrepreneurship, gaining confidence, skills, and freedom to live your life on your own terms. You will dream big and expand your consciousness as an entrepreneur.- Tina Baxter, Show Host and Founder of The Nurse Shark Academy.
About Carolyn Pritchard
Carolyn Pritchard is on a mission to improve patient care.
She is a spirited advocate who has been working to improve people’s experiences in the healthcare system for more than twenty years.
Extroverted and energetic, Carolyn has always been motivated by serving others. She’s a relationship builder with a knack for connecting people and making them feel cared for. Her North Star—to improve the patient experience—makes her a skilled negotiator and fuels her drive to get things done.
In her previous career as a Registered Nurse and her current role as a trusted leader in healthcare communications, she’s worked with people from every corner of the field: large pharmaceutical companies, emergency-room physicians, individual patients and everyone in between. She knows the gaps better than most and wakes up every day to fill them.
She co-founded Bridge Medical Communications with her business partner, Lorie Spence, to do just that. For over a decade, they have delivered empathetic, effective information about crucial medical therapies and procedures to the people who need it most.

This episode we dive into “ Leading with Clinical Confidence in Business”.
Let’s unpack three core leadership traits you’ve already mastered as a nurse—and how they translate beautifully to business:
Decisiveness Under Pressure
In the hospital, we don’t get to overanalyze—we assess, decide, and act.
👉 In business, that same instinct drives forward motion. You’ll need it for pricing, client contracts, and hiring decisions.
Clear, Compassionate Communication
Nurses know how to explain complex things to stressed-out people—patients, families, even physicians.
👉 That’s gold in business, whether you’re pitching your services, leading a team, or negotiating terms.
Advocacy & Ethical Thinking
You’ve been a voice for patients.
👉 In business, you’re advocating for your clients, your values, and your professional standards.
These aren’t “soft skills”—they are leadership essentials.
So how can you build on your leadership style as a nurse entrepreneur?
Here are three ways:
Reflect on High-Stakes Clinical Moments
Think about a time you led a situation at the bedside. How did you stay composed? What strengths showed up?
Write Your Clinical-to-CEO Narrative
Grab a notebook and write: “My nursing experience prepared me to lead a business because…” This helps rewire your confidence.
Act Before You Feel 100% Ready
Confidence doesn’t come before the action—it grows because of the action. As nurses, we do hard things scared every day.
You already have what it takes to lead. You just need to give yourself permission to own it.
🎯 Your action step today:
Identify one clinical skill you relied on this week—and write down one way it can serve your business.
Then share it with us! Tag me @ https://www.instagram.com/thenursesharkacademy/
